When a PDF won't convert perfectly
A PDF describes where to paint each character on a page; it does not record that a run of characters is a heading, a list, or a table cell. Every converter has to infer that structure back from the geometry, so heavily designed documents — magazine layouts, multi-column reports, forms — convert less cleanly than a straightforward text document. Scanned PDFs contain no text at all, only images of text, and need optical character recognition before they can be edited. Whenever something can't be reproduced faithfully, the result screen says so, instead of leaving you to discover it in Word.
